Art Opening Harbor Gallery

Gina Fullerton and Penelope Cake are Featured Artists at the Harbor Gallery in Cape May – Opening Reception July 5th

The Nature Center of Cape May is proud to present our featured artists, Gina Fullerton and Penelope Cake, in the Harbor Gallery’s July show which opens on Tuesday, July 2nd. The public is invited to a meet “The Artists Reception” on First Friday, July 5th from 4 to 6 pm. Light refreshments will be served. The Harbor Gallery is located at the Nature Center of Cape May at 1600 Delaware Avenue in Cape May. The exhibit will continue through to the end of the month.

A lifelong creative, Gina Fullerton is an artist who opted out of her old life to move to a little cottage by the bay. There she works in various mediums including oils, acrylics, and watercolors. Some inspirations include the creatures and plants of the region, her peregrinations, and the landscapes of the Delaware bayshore. She has not looked back. “For the first time ever my painting most closely reflects the cacophony and joy of my interior life,” explains Gina. “I didn’t go to art school but I wasn’t completely self taught,” she adds. “My grandfather was a professional artist who ensured we kids had the best supplies and our home contained art books and original paintings. As a young artist, I worked painstakingly in pen and ink and crisp, exacting calligraphy. I minored in Art History in college and took as many studio art classes as I could as an English major. I’ve traveled as often as budget and time would allow to indulge my passion for art and architecture and continue to do so as much as I can.”
Gina’s resume includes cookbook illustrations, a massive school mural, commissions and set pieces for a local original play. She has been selling her artwork professionally for the last 10-15 years and continues to participate in classes and workshops with professional artists/teachers.

Penelope Cake is a visual artist, choreographer, and performer. Her work has been displayed and produced by several venues in Cape May and New York City. In addition, she is the creator and director of Art Depot, a creative reuse center in Villas, a non-profit store sponsored by the Center For Community Arts that sells gently used art and craft supplies. “I transform plain cigar boxes into one-of-a-kind artwork using paper ephemera, found objects, unique trims, and felt. I think of them as treasure boxes, each one evocative of a nature theme such as trees, the sky, birds, and bees. These boxes can be used for storing small personal treasures or mementos.”  This is the first time she has showed her signature jewelry boxes, all created this year. She also works in collage, assemblage, and embroidery and can often be found at Art Depot teaching classes and encouraging artist, young and old, to discover their creative selves.

The Harbor Gallery features nature themed artists every month from May to October with an Opening Reception held on on the First Friday of each month. Mark your calendar to meet our August’s artist, Cindy Bilbao, on Friday August 2nd. from 4-6 pm.
