The Kiwanis Club of Cape May in conjunction with the City of Cape May will honor and remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93. The event will take place on September 11th starting at 6:00 PM in Cape May City at the Firehouse, 712 Franklin St.

The annual commemoration ceremony is a solemn and moving ceremony with speakers from local organizations along with community leaders who will speak of the sacrifice of Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Technicians who valiantly struggled that day to save lives. There is a moment of silence as the flag is lowered.

Seating is limited so please bring a chair. Parking is available at the lot on Lafayette St. and St. John.

Prior to the ceremony, a piece of steel from the World Trade Center will be on display inside the Firehouse. Guests are encouraged to view this memorable piece of history beginning at 5:00 PM. This piece of steel was recovered from Ground Zero in the weeks that followed the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Members of the Eck family, including the City’s Deputy Fire Chief Michael Eck, were able to procure the piece of history with the intent of preserving the memory of the 3,000 lives lost on this tragic day, and the thousands of lives lost due to long term illness suffered from exposure to the toxic dust in the months of recovery after. It was not immediately known how best to preserve this important piece of history, however what was known is that remembrance of the attacks on America are for all. The opening of the new Firehouse presented an opportunity to present this history for all to see and connect with those we lost. All are invited to come, remember, and pay respect. We hope that everyone can remember the unity and compassion shown on the days and weeks that followed these attacks and forever hold the memory of those we lost in our hearts.
