Bathing Beauties: Cape May’s Swimwear History

Text by | Published September 22nd, 2010 in BeachesHistory

This story originally ran in the July 2008 issue of Cape May Magazine. It is 1950, well, maybe ’51. The war is over and optimism abounds. Island Surfing

    Text by | Published August 1st, 2009 in BeachesOutdoors/Water

Trying to describe the impact of surfing on Cape May is like trying to describe the impact of baseball on America – it’s an incredibly broad topic. Many locals have built their lives around surfing, embracing careers that allow them the luxury of ditching work whenever the surf is pumping. For some, surfing defines their lives, chooses their friends for them and shapes the way they see the world. For others it’s a later-in-life hobby that’s now a passion. Anyway you look at it, surfing, even in Cape May, is nothing short of a religion for its most ardent followers.

    Collecting Cape May Beach Tags

Text by | Published May 1st, 2008 in BeachesCape May

Oh, those pesky Cape May beach tags! Everyone complains about them. Some try to wrangle their way out of buying them. Still others go out of their way to buy them early. C.M.B.P. The Anatomy of a Rescue

Text by | Published August 1st, 2004 in BeachesCape MayLifeguards

Imagine this. It is a quiet, peaceful afternoon at the beach. You are sitting in your beach chair, waiting for the tide to rush over your legs, thinking, maybe you should move your chair back a bit so your stuff doesn’t get wet when, suddenly, whistles are blowing, lifeguards are running and pulling everyone out [...]

    Resorting in Cape May

Text by | Published August 1st, 2001 in BeachesCape MayLeisure

From 1850 through the early 1900s, Cape May came into its own as a summer resort. In fact, those early tourists didn’t “vacation” in Cape May, says Robert Heinly. “They ‘resorted’.”

These bathers in Cape May are carefully protected seven days a week, seven and a half hours a day by the dedicated, professional staff of the Cape May Beach Patrol.
